QUILTER'S PROTECT THE EARTH

Please take a moment of your time and visit the following website: www.carbonrally.com
I have taken 3 of the challenges and plan to take more as I find that changing my "habits" and life style really works. Our group gives a lot to our community through our charity "comfort quilts". This costs us time and money. Taking the carbon rally challenges is a way to be charitable to our earth and to humankind and, in many cases, puts money in our pockets through savings. Please join me. Take a challenge!

Trip Around the Star Class - August 16th, 2008

Please note: The incorrect name was given for the specialty tool required for the class; it should have been "QUILT in a DAY's Triangle Square Up Ruler." If you do not have one and are unable to pick one up prior to class, one will be avalable during class and there will also be copies of the grid for everyone.

We will first concentrate on making the STAR block.

PRIOR TO CLASS:

Choose 5 fabrics for the star & make a fabric key

Press fabric (I use Best Press or Magic Sizing for this) & cut as follows

#1 - lightest - (cut 2 - 2 1/2" strips & 2 - 1 1/4" strips)
#2 - medium light - (cut 1 - 2 1/2" strip)
#3 - medium - (cut 1 - 2 1/2" strip)
#4 - medium dark - (cut 1 - 2 1/2" strip)
#5 - dark - (cut 1 - 2 1/2" strip)

You may also press (again using Best Press or Magic Sizing) & cut your 2" strips for the "trip" per the instructions in the pattern.

TUCSON QUILT SHOWS

Each year several of the OLB group travels to Tucson for their quilt show. Some of us even stay overnight & visit quilt stores. We also play games using "fat quarters".

It doesn't take much to entertain our group!

ROSIE'S OR BUST!

The OLB travels to Rosie's Calico Cupboard fabric store as often as possible. We try to go at least once a year.

Rosie's is located in San Diego, CA. You can visit her web site at:

Rosie carries all the best fabrics and at affordable prices. On this trip (shown) I paid an average of $7.79 a yard for my fabric. I added all the fabric I bought, two nights in the motel split 4 ways, and meals (I didn't pay for gas because I drove my car). NOT BAD!

HEALTH FAIR AT BANNER THUNDERBIRD

OLB supplies comfort quilts to Banner Thunderbird's Pediatric ER & Pediatric Ward. In 2007 we gave them just short of 800 quilts to hand out to children who are scared or under stress. In 2006, OLB participated in Banner's Health Fair. We had a booth showing the quilts we make and give away. The clown quilt hanging in our booth was made by Linda A.

OLB VISITS HELPING HANDS

Our last Charity day spent with Helping Hands was in 2006.

Helping Hands has wonderful "stations" set up for the workers.

On an average Charity Day, Helping Hands has 45 show up.

A lot of visiting takes place!

And, a LOT of work gets done.

Lunch comes after work & we're usually ready to eat.

Another productive and enjoyable day with new friends.
